RoHS and What it Means to the American Consumer
In 2003, European Union adapted a hazardous substances control program commonly known as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive; the Directive 2002/95/EC. It is often assumed that the the RoHS standard is for Lead only, however, it applies to five other hazardous substances other than Lead, including, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent chromium, Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).
In the European market, there is no standardized logo or declaration to denote a RoHS compliant product. Currently, the only items excluded from the compliance are batteries (as they are covered under different compliance regulations), medical devices and monitoring & control instruments. The producers are declaring product compliance by making it available for sale in the European market. Hence, the compliance is automatically implied with or without any special logo or statement from the seller.
